The SBA 7(a) Loan: What It Covers and How to Qualify

The 7(a) is the SBA's main loan program. A participating lender makes the loan, and the SBA guarantees a portion, which lets lenders approve borrowers they might otherwise decline. It is flexible and often low cost, but it takes time and paperwork.

How the 7(a) program works

A bank or other SBA-approved lender makes the loan and the SBA guarantees part of it. The guarantee reduces the lender's risk; you still owe the full debt.

The SBA does not typically lend the money itself. It sets the rules and backs a portion of the loan. That backing is why terms can be longer and requirements somewhat more flexible than a conventional bank loan.

You still sign a personal guarantee in most cases, and the lender may take collateral. The guarantee protects the lender, not you. If you default, you remain responsible. See SBA loan collateral requirements for how that works.

What you can use it for

7(a) funds can cover working capital, equipment, inventory, real estate, refinancing some business debt and buying or expanding a business.

  • Working capital and operating expenses
  • Equipment and furniture
  • Purchase of owner-occupied real estate or renovations
  • Refinancing qualifying business debt
  • Buying an existing business, including partner buyouts

It cannot generally be used for speculative investment, paying back personal loans in many situations, or items the SBA excludes. Your lender will confirm what is eligible. The broad list is why 7(a) is the program most owners look at first.

Loan size and terms

The program has a maximum loan size set by the SBA, currently described as $5 million, with longer terms for real estate than for equipment or working capital.

Terms are generally longest for real estate, shorter for equipment and shorter still for working capital. Interest rates are tied to a base rate plus a lender margin, within SBA limits. The exact caps and fees change, so confirm current figures on SBA.gov or with a lender.

See SBA loan interest rates and the SBA guarantee fee for how costs build up.

Basic requirements

Lenders look for a for-profit U.S. business that meets SBA size standards, shows ability to repay, has invested its own equity and has no excluded status.

Expect to provide business and personal tax returns, financial statements, a debt schedule, a business plan for the use of funds and ownership documents. Lenders also check credit, time in business and collateral. Read the full list in SBA loan requirements.

Owners who are unsure whether they qualify as small should review how the SBA defines a small business.

The tradeoff: speed

A 7(a) loan can take weeks to a few months from application to funding. If you need cash in days, plan an alternative.

The process involves underwriting by the lender and often SBA review. Missing documents are the most common cause of delay. Prepare a complete package before applying using the small business loan application checklist.

Illustrative example: if a $150,000 equipment purchase will earn $6,000 a month in new profit, every month of delay costs $6,000 in lost profit. A faster product with a higher cost may still come out ahead if it starts that profit two months sooner. Run the numbers both ways.

Is the SBA 7(a) loan the same as an SBA loan?

It is the SBA's main and most flexible loan program, but the SBA has others, including 504 and microloans.

Does the SBA lend the money directly?

Do I need collateral for a 7(a) loan?

Lenders usually require available collateral and a personal guarantee, though specifics depend on the loan size and lender.

How long does a 7(a) loan take?
