SBA Loan Credit Score Requirements: What Lenders Look For

The SBA does not set one minimum credit score for all loans. Each lender sets its own standard, and many SBA lenders prefer scores in the good range or better. Credit is one factor alongside cash flow, time in business and collateral, and a lower score may not end the conversation.

Who sets the credit minimum

Lenders do. The SBA guarantees part of the loan, but approved lenders apply their own credit policies within SBA rules.

That is why two lenders can give different answers for the same file. Some programs, particularly small-dollar streamlined ones, use a credit scoring step that applies a minimum score. For larger loans, underwriters review the whole picture, including payment history, debts and any derogatory items.

Because policies change, ask each lender for their current minimum and what exceptions they allow. See SBA loan requirements for the rest of the checklist.

Which scores are checked

Lenders review the owners' personal credit, and often business credit as well. Owners with 20 percent or more ownership are usually evaluated.

Personal credit matters because most SBA loans require personal guarantees. Business credit reports, such as those from commercial bureaus, add information on trade payments. If your business credit is thin, personal credit carries more weight. Our guide to building business credit helps over time.

What else lenders weigh

Cash flow, time in business, collateral, industry, existing debt and the quality of your documentation can offset or outweigh a middling score.

  • Cash flow: do earnings cover the new payment with a cushion?
  • Payment history: recent late payments hurt more than old ones.
  • Debt load: high balances compared with limits reduce scores and approval odds.
  • Public records: tax liens, judgments and bankruptcies need explanation.
  • Government debts: delinquent federal debt, including student loans, can block eligibility until resolved.

Tell the story behind any blemish. A lender reading a thirty-day late payment from three years ago, followed by a clean record, reaches a different conclusion than one seeing the same mark with no context. Keep the explanation short, factual and dated, and attach documents if they exist, such as a medical bill or a settlement letter.

Also check your business credit file if you have one. Errors there are less common but can matter for trade-credit decisions.

Ways to improve your file before applying

Pay revolving balances down, correct report errors, keep every account current and avoid new credit applications before you apply.

  1. Pull your reports and dispute errors.
  2. Reduce credit card balances below roughly a third of limits if you can.
  3. Bring past-due accounts current.
  4. Avoid opening new accounts for several months.
  5. Write a short explanation for any past problem, with dates and what changed.

Even modest score improvements can shift pricing and approval odds. Allow time. Some changes appear on reports within one or two billing cycles.

If your score is below the SBA range

Faster, non-SBA products often consider lower scores, usually at higher cost. Compare total repayment and use the money for something that pays back.

ROI Funder considers 500+ FICO, along with 6+ months in business and $20,000+ monthly revenue. That opens options like working capital, revenue-based financing and term loans, which rely more on bank-statement cash flow.

Illustrative example: funding that costs $6,000 more than an SBA loan but lets you start a $4,000-a-month profit project two months earlier gives $8,000 of extra profit. Run your own numbers. See SBA loan options with bad credit for more.

Applying without hurting your score

A soft credit pull does not affect your score. A hard inquiry can, so ask what type of pull a lender uses before you apply.

ROI Funder's application is online, takes a few minutes and uses a soft credit pull with no impact on your credit score. You are not obligated to accept any offer. A complete file is the application plus three months of business bank statements, and money can arrive the same business day on approved, complete files for the fastest products. Apply here.

What credit score do I need for an SBA loan?

There is no single SBA minimum. Lenders set their own, and many prefer good credit. Ask each lender for their current standard.

Can I get funding with a score near 500?

ROI Funder considers 500+ FICO for non-SBA products. Other factors such as revenue and time in business also matter.

Does checking my own credit hurt my score?

No. Checking your own report is a soft inquiry.

Do business credit scores matter for SBA loans?

They can, but personal credit usually carries more weight, especially for newer businesses.
