Best Term Loan Companies: A Scorecard to Pick Yours

The best term loan company is the one whose offer costs least for your situation, with payments your cash flow can carry. That changes by credit, revenue, industry and how fast you need the money. Below is the scorecard we use, so you can compare any offers side by side.

Why a single ranked list misleads

Lenders price by risk, so the best option for a business with strong credit and years of history is rarely the best for a newer, lower-credit one.

Ranked lists tend to reward whichever company advertises most or pays for placement. They also hide a basic fact: you will not receive the advertised best rate unless your file matches the lender's ideal borrower.

Three buckets exist in practice:

  • Banks and credit unions: lowest cost, strictest requirements, slowest funding.
  • Online term lenders: faster decisions, moderate cost, broader credit range.
  • Alternative funders: fastest and most flexible, highest cost.

Which bucket you can reach depends on credit, time in business and revenue, so start by checking where you stand. See the business loan requirements guide for what each bucket expects.

The seven-point scorecard

Score each offer on total repayment, monthly-equivalent payment, term, fees, prepayment rules, speed and collateral. The cheapest quoted rate alone tells you little.

  1. Total repayment. Everything you will pay back, in dollars. This beats comparing percentages across different structures.
  2. Monthly-equivalent payment. Convert weekly or daily payments to a monthly figure so offers compare fairly.
  3. Term. Longer lowers the payment but usually raises the total cost.
  4. Fees. Origination, documentation, funding and servicing fees can be deducted from the proceeds, so you receive less than you borrow.
  5. Prepayment. Does paying early save money, or is the full fee owed anyway?
  6. Speed. A cheaper loan that arrives after the opportunity is gone has a hidden cost.
  7. Collateral and guarantees. Liens on assets or a personal guarantee change your risk.

Keep a simple sheet with one row per offer. Seeing three offers in the same columns usually makes the answer obvious.

Comparing two offers with round numbers

A lower rate with a long term can cost more than a higher rate with a short one. Always compare total dollars repaid.

Illustrative comparison on a $100,000 term loan (example numbers only)
MeasureOffer AOffer B
Term12 months36 months
Fees taken from proceeds$3,000$2,000
Total repayment$114,000$126,000
Monthly-equivalent payment$9,500$3,500
Cash received$97,000$98,000

Offer A costs less in total. Offer B is far lighter each month. If the project earns $12,000 a month, A is tight and B is comfortable. If the project earns $30,000 a month, A saves $12,000 overall. The winner depends on what the money produces, not on the rate alone.

Red flags when choosing a company

Be wary of anyone who will not show total repayment in writing, pressures a same-day signature, or promises approval before seeing documents.

  • No clear dollar figure for total repayment.
  • Fees buried in a contract rather than stated up front.
  • Language promising approval before any review of your finances.
  • Pressure to sign immediately or refusal to give you time to read.
  • A requirement to pay a fee before you receive any offer.

Read the agreement for confession of judgment, default triggers, and auto-renewal language. If anything is unclear, ask for a plain explanation in writing, and consider having an accountant or attorney look at larger commitments. The guide to business loan agreements explains the terms you will see.

Where ROI Funder fits

ROI Funder is not a single term lender. It matches your file to the funders in a network that fit, and shows true cost before you sign.

Because one application reaches many funders, you see comparable offers without filling out a dozen forms. ROI Funder places term loans with fixed payments, typically funded in 1 to 5 days, along with lines of credit, equipment financing, revenue-based financing and SBA loans.

We show total cost, payback period and monthly-equivalent payment up front. ROI Funder considers 500+ FICO, 6+ months in business and $20,000+ in monthly revenue, with funding from $5,000 to $5,000,000 across all 50 states. Applying uses a soft credit pull and carries no obligation.

Preparing your file so offers come in better

Prepare early and ask specific questions, because the details decide whether the deal works.

Offers improve when the file is clean. Gather three months of business bank statements, a short note on what the money will buy, and your best estimate of the revenue it will add. Funders see hundreds of files, and a clear purpose with simple numbers stands out.

Fix small problems first. Resolve overdrafts, avoid opening new credit lines in the weeks before you apply, and make sure the business name and owner details match across documents. Mismatches cause delays that look like risk.

Finally, decide your ceiling before you talk to anyone. Know the largest monthly-equivalent payment the business can carry in its weakest month, and refuse offers above it. That one number protects you from the most common mistake, which is borrowing against your best month instead of your worst.

Choosing between a term loan and other products

Pick a term loan for a one-time, defined investment. Pick a line of credit for repeating gaps and revenue-based financing when sales are uneven.

If you know the exact amount and the asset or project it buys, a term loan's fixed schedule is easy to plan around. If costs recur or vary, a line of credit costs less in total because you borrow only what you need. If revenue swings, payments tied to sales avoid the stress of a fixed bill. The page on which funding fits your business walks through the decision.

Frequently asked questions

What credit score do I need for a term loan?

It depends on the funder. Banks often want far higher scores than alternative funders. ROI Funder considers files from 500+ FICO, with revenue and time in business also weighed.

How long does a term loan take to fund?

Bank loans can take weeks. Online and alternative term loans commonly fund in 1 to 5 days once documents are complete.

Should I pick the lowest interest rate?

Not by itself. Compare total repayment, fees deducted from proceeds, and the monthly-equivalent payment, because structures differ.

Can I repay a term loan early?

Sometimes with savings, sometimes not. Ask whether interest or fees are fixed up front, since some structures owe the full cost even if you pay off early.
