Funding for Buying Commercial Vehicles

A work van or truck earns money only when it is on the road, so financing should follow the routes and jobs it will run. ROI Funder places equipment financing for many commercial vehicles in 2 to 7 days. Some industries, especially long-haul trucking, are restricted by many funders, and this page says so plainly.

What vehicles can be financed

Cargo vans, pickup trucks, box trucks, trailers, service bodies and similar work vehicles are commonly financed as equipment.

Commercial vehicle financing covers a wide range, from a $40,000 cargo van for an electrician to a $120,000 box truck for a delivery company. Trailers, dump bodies, lift gates and shop-built service bodies can often be financed along with the chassis, or separately.

Funders typically look at the vehicle type, age, mileage if used, and the dealer's invoice. Vehicles with a broad resale market, like standard pickup trucks and cargo vans, tend to be easier to finance than highly specialized builds. Review our pages on commercial vehicles and dump trucks for industry-specific notes.

Industries funders restrict

Many funders restrict long-haul trucking and some residential construction, so approval is not assured in those industries.

Plainly: if you run long-haul trucking, full truckload or less-than-truckload, many funders in the market will not fund you or will limit terms, because of the risk profile of the industry. That does not rule out every option, but it means you should not count on it. Local delivery, service trades and contractors with vehicles are viewed differently from over-the-road carriers.

Likewise, many funders restrict residential remodeling and new residential construction. If you work in those fields, apply and see what is available instead of assuming, but expect fewer options and be careful of offers that sound too easy. Our trucking page covers what is realistic.

Payback math on a work vehicle

Estimate the revenue the vehicle adds per month, subtract operating costs, and compare what remains with the monthly payment.

Illustrative example. A florist buys a $55,000 refrigerated van to add event deliveries. Total financing repayment is $66,000 over five years, about $1,100 a month. Fuel, insurance and maintenance for the van average $1,000 a month. The van lets the shop deliver to 35 additional events a month at $120 gross profit each, so $4,200.

Monthly calculation: $4,200 added profit minus $1,000 operating minus $1,100 payment leaves $2,100. The van pays back its financing in about 31 months of that net, or earlier if you count the profit that comes before the payment.

The test is demand. If the florist only books half of those events, $2,100 of profit becomes $1,200 minus costs and payment, which is only $100 after everything. Check each assumption against actual orders. The payback period guide walks through it.

Costs people forget

Insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, driver pay and downtime are real costs that belong in the vehicle's budget.

  • Commercial insurance. Often higher than personal auto, and usually required by the funder.
  • Registration, tags and taxes. Vary by state and vehicle weight.
  • Maintenance. Brakes, tires and routine service add up with heavy use.
  • Driver cost. If the vehicle requires a new hire, include wages and payroll taxes.
  • Branding and upfitting. Shelving, wraps and equipment racks.
  • Depreciation. Vehicles lose value fast, so match the term to realistic life.

Ask your accountant how the purchase is treated for taxes. Rules and limits change, so confirm the current ones rather than relying on a number from an old article.

Compare financing with leasing and rental

Financing builds ownership, leasing lowers payments but caps mileage and ownership, and renting is best to test demand before committing.

If you are not sure the demand exists, rent for a few months first. A rental costs more per day but commits you to nothing, and the booking data it generates is exactly what you need to size the purchase.

Leasing can make sense for businesses that replace vehicles often or want predictable payments, but check mileage limits and end-of-term charges. Buying with financing makes sense when you will use the vehicle for years. For the choice between products, which funding fits your business helps compare options side by side.

Applying with ROI Funder

Apply online in a few minutes with a soft credit pull, and send the dealer quote plus three months of business bank statements.

ROI Funder considers 500+ FICO, 6+ months in business and $20,000+ in monthly revenue, in all 50 states, from $5,000 to $5,000,000. Equipment financing for vehicles takes about 2 to 7 days. If you need cash immediately for a deposit, working capital can arrive faster on approved, complete files. We show cost, payback period and monthly-equivalent payments side by side, and there is no obligation to accept an offer.

Before you sign, ask the dealer for the out-the-door price in writing, including taxes, fees, upfitting and delivery. Compare that figure across at least two dealers, since the sticker price often leaves out thousands in add-ons. If a used vehicle is on the table, have an independent mechanic inspect it first. A repair bill in the first year can erase the savings from buying used, and a funder will want a clear invoice either way.

Think about downtime too. A van in the shop is a van not earning, so ask the dealer or repair shop about turnaround on common repairs and whether a loaner is available. For a one-vehicle business, a week out of service can cost more than a month of payments, and that belongs in your plan alongside fuel and insurance.
