Northern Virginia and the federal payment cycle

Government contractors often wait 30 to 60 days or more for payment while payroll runs every two weeks.

Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Alexandria host many small firms serving federal agencies and larger contractors: IT, consulting, security, engineering and facilities support. Payroll is the biggest cost, and invoices pay slowly. That gap is the classic case for a line of credit or working capital.

We do not place invoice factoring or accounts-receivable financing, though some contractors use them elsewhere. A line of credit is the closest ROI Funder product: you draw to cover payroll and repay when the payment lands.

Hampton Roads, Richmond and the rest

Different regions rely on different industries.

  • Hampton Roads: ports, shipbuilding, military support, marine trades and tourism at Virginia Beach.
  • Richmond: state government, banking, healthcare, a strong restaurant and brewery scene.
  • Shenandoah and the mountains: farms, wineries, orchards, outdoor tourism.
  • Southside and Southwest: manufacturing, tobacco and furniture heritage, and growing logistics.

See manufacturing and restaurants for sector pages.

A contractor payroll example

Bridging a payment delay costs money, so test whether the contract margin covers it.

Illustrative only. A small IT firm has $90,000 in biweekly payroll and costs and waits 60 days for a client to pay. It draws $90,000 at a total cost of $9,000. If the contract margin is 15 percent on $200,000 of billings, margin is $30,000, and the bridge cost is 30 percent of that. Acceptable if the contract continues; worth rethinking if it does not. Ask whether renegotiating payment terms might cost less than financing the delay.

Eastern Time

Virginia is on Eastern Time with our team.

No offset. A complete file submitted in the morning has the whole business day. Complete means the application plus three months of business bank statements. Same-day applies to approved, complete files.

Veterans and the military

Virginia has a large veteran and military-family population, and many own businesses.

The usual criteria apply. Veterans may also qualify for specific SBA support, so check current programs. Our veteran-owned business page has more detail.

Stress-testing a Virginia contractor's plan

A contract can end or slow before the loan does.

Contract work carries renewal risk. Before borrowing against a federal or prime-contractor relationship, ask how many months of payments you could cover if the contract paused. If the answer is fewer than three, borrow less, or pick a flexible structure such as a credit line you can pay down quickly. Our guide to stress-testing payments shows the steps.

Also look at concentration. If one client is more than half your revenue, funders will notice, and so should you. Diversifying even slightly reduces risk and often improves the terms you are offered.

Coastal and tourism businesses

Virginia Beach, the Eastern Shore and the Blue Ridge draw seasonal visitors.

Hotels, restaurants, rental operators and outfitters hire and stock before the season. A line of credit drawn in spring and repaid by fall fits the rhythm. Storm risk on the coast calls for insurance and a cash reserve alongside any financing. Wineries and orchards in the Shenandoah and Piedmont regions have a similar pattern of spending ahead of harvest and tourism seasons. Read funding a seasonal business for ideas.

What a complete file includes

Three months of statements and the application.

Send full PDFs from the main operating account. Contractors should note which deposits are contract payments, which helps funders see steady receipts. If you have existing financing, include a short list. A complete, clear file is the best way to make same-day delivery possible. See how it works.

State and federal resources

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership and the SBA's Virginia district offices list programs.

Confirm current details with them. SBA loans are often the lowest-cost path for patient borrowers.
