Long-Term Business Loan Options: Which One Fits

Long-term business loans spread repayment over several years, which lowers each payment and suits big, lasting investments. The main options are SBA loans, bank term loans, online term loans and equipment financing. The right one depends on what you buy and how fast you need it.

When a long term makes sense

Choose a long term when the thing you are buying keeps producing value for years, such as equipment, a build-out, a second location or a major expansion.

The rule is to match repayment length to useful life. A forklift that works for eight years can sit on a five-year loan. Inventory that sells in two months should not.

Longer terms mean smaller payments, which protects monthly cash flow. The tradeoff is that you usually pay more interest in total, and you are committed longer. Before choosing, put the total payback beside the extra profit the investment will produce. Our guide to short-term vs. long-term business loans adds more detail.

SBA loans: the lowest cost, the slowest path

SBA-backed loans offer some of the longest terms and lowest costs available to small businesses, but applications take more paperwork and more time.

The SBA guarantees part of loans made by participating lenders, which lets them offer longer terms. The two best-known programs are 7(a) for general purposes and 504 for major fixed assets such as real estate and heavy equipment. Terms, caps and fees are set by the SBA and change, so check SBA.gov for current rules.

Expect to provide tax returns, financial statements and a clear use of funds. It is a strong option when you can wait weeks and your file is well documented. Read about the SBA 7(a) loan and SBA 504 loans, or see our page on SBA loans.

Bank and online term loans

A term loan gives you a lump sum repaid with fixed payments. Banks tend to price lower but ask for more documentation. Online funders move faster and look at revenue and cash flow.

Both work the same way: you receive the full amount, then make scheduled payments. The differences are speed, paperwork and who qualifies.

  • Banks. Often lower cost, with stricter credit, time-in-business and collateral requirements, and longer waits.
  • Online and alternative funders. Faster decisions, more flexible requirements, and usually higher cost.

Through ROI Funder's network, term loans generally take 1 to 5 days. For a deeper look at the bank route, see the pros and cons of bank business loans.

Equipment financing: the asset secures the loan

Equipment financing uses the equipment itself as collateral, which often makes approval easier and lets the term follow the asset's useful life.

Because the machine backs the loan, you may not need to pledge other assets. That can keep your cash and credit lines free for operations. Funding generally takes 2 to 7 days through ROI Funder, and the term is typically tied to how long the equipment will last.

This is the right tool for vehicles, kitchen equipment, production machines, medical devices and similar assets. It is the wrong one for working capital or marketing spend. Learn more about equipment financing.

Comparing options with an example

Compare total repayment, monthly payment and the speed you need. A lower rate can still cost more if the term is longer.

Illustrative example: you need $100,000 for a build-out expected to add $4,000 a month in profit. Option A is a 10-year loan with a lower payment but higher total interest. Option B is a 5-year loan with a higher payment and lower total cost. If $4,000 of added profit covers Option A's payment easily but strains Option B's, A may be safer even if it costs more overall. If you can carry B, you save money.

How to pick and apply

List the purchase, its useful life and the monthly profit it should add, then choose the longest option you actually need, not the longest available.

A quick process:

  1. Write the exact amount and what it buys.
  2. Estimate the added monthly profit.
  3. Decide your maximum comfortable monthly payment.
  4. Gather three months of business bank statements and your latest financials.
  5. Compare total repayment across offers.

ROI Funder considers 500+ FICO, 6+ months in business and $20,000+ in monthly revenue, from $5,000 up to $5,000,000. Applying takes a few minutes with a soft credit pull. See which funding fits your business to compare products.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a long-term business loan?

Usually a loan repaid over several years rather than months. Exact definitions vary by funder, so ask for the term and total payback.

Which long-term loan has the lowest cost?

SBA-backed loans are generally the lowest-cost option, but they take longer and require more documentation.

Can I get a long-term loan quickly?

Term loans through ROI Funder's network generally take 1 to 5 days and equipment financing 2 to 7 days, while SBA loans are slower.

Is a longer term always better?

No. It lowers each payment but usually raises total interest. Choose the term your cash flow can carry and the asset justifies.
