What the SBA actually provides
The SBA guarantees loans, funds counseling and training, and runs contracting programs. Direct cash grants to individual businesses are limited and tied to special programs.
Its core offerings are loan guarantees (7(a), 504, microloans), counseling through SBDCs, SCORE and Women's Business Centers, and help with government contracting. Some programs fund intermediaries or specific research and innovation efforts rather than writing checks to everyday businesses.
Programs and funding change, so check SBA.gov for current offerings. For the loan side, see our overview of the SBA 7(a) loan.
Where real grants come from
Legitimate small business grants come from federal agencies for research and specific missions, state and local economic development offices, and private foundations and corporations.
- Federal research programs: agencies fund technology and research projects through competitive applications.
- State and city programs: economic development offices sometimes offer grants for job creation, storefront improvements or targeted industries.
- Nonprofits and foundations: some fund businesses owned by veterans, women, or entrepreneurs in specific communities.
- Corporate contests: a few companies run small business grant competitions with set eligibility.
Most are competitive, require a detailed application and often come with reporting rules. Do not plan your whole financing around winning one.
How to spot grant scams
Be wary of anyone who charges a fee to get you a grant, promises guaranteed money or contacts you unsolicited claiming you have been selected.
Real government grants are listed publicly and never require you to pay to receive them. Warning signs include:
- A processing fee or a request for a bank login to "release" funds
- Pressure to act today
- A social media message claiming you qualify for free money
- A website that looks official but is not a .gov address
When in doubt, search the program name on the official agency site yourself instead of clicking a link you were sent.
Writing an application that has a chance
Read the eligibility rules, answer exactly what is asked, show how funds will be used and what outcome they produce, and submit before the deadline.
Grant reviewers compare many applications. Clear numbers help. State the amount requested, the budget for each use, and the measurable result, such as jobs created or equipment placed in service. Have your business documents ready: registration, tax records, financial statements and a short plan.

Grants are slow, so plan for the gap
Grant decisions can take months and awards are uncertain. Keep a financing plan that does not depend on winning.
Even when you win, funds may be paid after you spend, as a reimbursement. That creates a cash gap. Illustrative example: a $30,000 reimbursable grant requires you to buy equipment first. If you do not have the cash, you may need short-term funding to bridge until the grant pays.

When a loan is the more realistic route
If you need money soon and have steady revenue, financing is usually faster and more certain than a grant. Weigh its cost against what it earns.
ROI Funder places working capital, term loans, a line of credit, equipment financing and SBA loans through our funder network. We consider 500+ FICO, 6+ months in business and $20,000+ monthly revenue, and funds can arrive the same business day on approved, complete files.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find legitimate small business grants?
Federal agency listings, state and city economic development offices, and reputable foundations and corporate programs.
Should I pay someone to find me a grant?
Be very cautious. Real government grants do not require a fee to receive them.
Do I have to repay a grant?
Usually not, but grants carry rules and reporting requirements, and misuse can require repayment.
