What SBA Express is, per the SBA
SBA Express loans are capped at $500,000 with a maximum SBA guarantee of 50 percent, and the lender makes the credit decision itself.
The SBA's list of 7(a) loan types (checked October 2026) states that SBA Express has a maximum loan amount of $500,000 and a maximum SBA guarantee of 50 percent. Express lenders make the credit decision without SBA review. Revolving lines of credit are allowed under Express, with terms of up to 10 years.
The page does not list a turnaround time, and actual speed depends on the lender and the completeness of your file. Treat any specific day-count you hear as a lender estimate, not a program promise.
For the overall program, read what is an SBA loan.
Why the smaller guarantee matters
With only half the loan guaranteed, the lender carries more risk and may ask for stronger credit, collateral or cash flow.
A bigger guarantee gives a lender more cushion to approve a borderline file. At 50 percent, the lender is still on the hook for the other half, so it can be pickier. Borrowers with solid credit, steady cash flow and clean financials fare best.
Compare the two lanes:
- Express: quicker lender decision, smaller guarantee, up to $500,000.
- Standard 7(a): more SBA review, larger guarantee, higher possible amounts. The SBA states a $5 million maximum per its 7(a) page (checked October 2026).
If you need more than $500,000 or a borderline file, standard may serve better despite the wait.
Typical uses and an example
Express fits working capital, equipment, refinancing eligible debt and revolving credit needs for established, creditworthy businesses.
Illustrative example. A veterinary clinic wants a $250,000 revolving line to manage equipment upgrades and payroll timing. With an Express line, the lender can approve and open it on its own authority. If the clinic draws $60,000, it pays on that amount, and the rest stays available.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Line limit | $250,000 |
| Amount drawn | $60,000 |
| Interest accrues on | $60,000 only |
| Unused room | $190,000 |
Rates, fees and terms vary by lender and are subject to SBA limits. Ask the lender for the rate, the guarantee fee and all closing costs in writing. See SBA guarantee fees and SBA lines of credit.
Who qualifies
Established businesses with good credit, steady revenue and the ability to repay. Standards vary by lender, and many also need collateral and a personal guarantee.
SBA lenders generally want a clear repayment story: tax returns, financial statements, a use-of-funds plan, and owner credit that supports a long-term loan. Newer businesses and lower scores face a harder time. For details on the credit side, see SBA loan credit score requirements, and on paperwork see SBA loan requirements.
Check with the SBA or your lender for the program's current rules on eligibility and use of proceeds. They change, and we do not give a score cutoff here.
Questions to ask an Express lender
Prepare early and ask specific questions, because the details decide whether the deal works.
Because the lender decides on its own authority, the lender matters. Ask whether it regularly makes Express loans and how many it has closed lately. A lender that does this often will know where files stall and can tell you realistic timing.
Ask what documents are needed up front, and whether any can be waived or replaced by recent bank statements. Ask how collateral is handled and whether you will be asked for a personal guarantee. Ask for the interest rate in writing, including how it is set and whether it changes over time.
Ask about every fee: the SBA guarantee fee if applicable, packaging fees, closing costs and any servicing fees. Then ask what happens if you need to pay early. Taking the answers in writing makes it easy to compare an Express offer with a standard SBA loan and with faster, higher-cost alternatives.
When to choose something faster
If you need funds within days, have thin credit, or are under two years old, a faster product may serve you before an SBA loan does.
Even Express requires documents and lender review that take longer than most online funders. ROI Funder can fund working capital the same business day on approved complete files, and term loans in 1 to 5 days. These typically cost more than SBA money, so use them to bridge or to seize a time-limited opportunity.
ROI Funder places SBA loans too, matching your file to funders in our network. We show the SBA route next to faster options, with true cost and monthly-equivalent payments, so you can choose with numbers. Apply on the application page, with a soft credit pull and no obligation.
