How to Find the Best SBA Lender for Your Business

The SBA does not lend money directly. Banks, credit unions and other approved lenders make SBA-backed loans. The best one for you is the lender that handles your loan type and size, moves at a pace you can live with and has a record of closing deals like yours.

What an SBA lender actually does

An SBA lender underwrites and funds the loan, and the SBA guarantees part of it. The guarantee reduces the lender's risk, not yours.

The lender decides whether to approve you, sets terms within SBA rules and services the loan after closing. If you default, the SBA may pay the lender part of the loss, but you remain responsible and the lender can pursue collateral and personal guarantees.

Criteria that matter more than a name

Judge lenders on SBA experience, your loan size and industry, turnaround time, total fees and how well they communicate.

Any ranking that names one winner for everybody is not worth much. Use these checks instead:

  • Preferred status. The SBA gives some lenders delegated authority to approve loans faster. Ask whether the lender holds it.
  • Loan size fit. Some lenders focus on small loans, others on larger real estate or acquisition deals.
  • Industry experience. A lender who knows restaurants or medical practices will ask better questions and move faster.
  • Timeline. Ask for a realistic range from application to funding.
  • Total cost. Interest rate plus guarantee fee, packaging fees and closing costs.

Questions to ask before you apply

Ask about approval rates for your profile, required documents, who handles your file and what happens if the deal changes.

  1. How many SBA loans of my size and type do you close in a year?
  2. What is the typical timeline, and what slows deals down?
  3. What collateral and personal guarantees do you require?
  4. What fees will I pay, and when?
  5. Do I work with one named person throughout?

Compare at least three lenders. Get quotes in writing and use the funding offer comparison worksheet to put them side by side.

Prepare so the lender can say yes

A complete package, clean financials and a clear use of funds improve your odds with any SBA lender.

Gather personal and business tax returns, financial statements, a debt schedule, a business plan or purpose summary, and ownership details. Review our SBA loan requirements and common application mistakes before you start.

Credit expectations vary by lender. See SBA loan credit score requirements for what to expect.

Speed: where SBA loans fall short

SBA loans offer low cost and long terms, but they take weeks or longer. They rarely fit an urgent cash need.

Underwriting, documentation and closing add up. If payroll is due Friday or a supplier deal expires this week, an SBA loan is likely too slow. Learn more about how long an SBA loan takes.

That is not a flaw. It is the trade for lower cost. The question is whether the project can wait.

Mistakes to avoid when comparing lenders

Do not choose on interest rate alone, skip reading the fee schedule or assume the first quote is the best.

Rate is only one part of cost. A lower rate with high packaging fees can cost more than a higher rate with none. Ask for a full written breakdown and compare in dollars over the life of the loan.

Also avoid applying everywhere at once with different numbers. Prepare one clean package and give every lender the same information. Inconsistent figures raise questions and slow reviews.

Finally, do not ignore the relationship. SBA loans last years, and you will deal with your lender at renewals, covenant checks and servicing questions. Our guide to building a strong relationship with your SBA lender covers what to expect.

When a faster option makes sense

If you need money now and the payback is clear, a faster product can be worth its higher cost. Run the numbers on both.

Here is an illustrative example. A $100,000 equipment purchase will add $8,000 a month in profit. Waiting 90 days for an SBA loan costs $24,000 in lost profit. A faster option that costs a few thousand more may come out ahead.
