Maximum SBA Loan Amounts: What Each Program Allows

SBA.gov lists a maximum of $5 million for a 7(a) loan, up to $50,000 for a microloan, and $5.5 million for a 504 loan. A program cap is a ceiling, not a promise. What you can actually borrow depends on your finances and the lender.

The caps for the main programs

Per SBA.gov, 7(a) loans go up to $5 million, 504 loans up to $5.5 million, and microloans up to $50,000. Confirm current figures before applying.

These figures come from the SBA's own program pages, checked October 2026: the 7(a) page states the maximum is $5 million, the 504 page lists $5.5 million, and the microloan page says loans up to $50,000.

Why the cap is not what you will be offered

Lenders size each loan to your repayment ability, collateral and purpose. Most borrowers receive far less than the program maximum.

The SBA guarantees a portion of the loan, but the lender still decides whether and how much to lend. They look at:

  • Cash flow. Can the business cover the payment with room to spare?
  • Use of funds. A clear purchase with a quote is easier to size than a vague request.
  • Collateral and equity. What is pledged and how much cash you are putting in yourself.
  • Credit and experience. Personal and business history.

You do not qualify for the maximum by default. You qualify for an amount your numbers can carry.

How lenders test your repayment ability

Lenders compare annual cash available for debt payments with the annual payments, often wanting a cushion above 1.0. This is the debt service coverage ratio.

Illustrative example: your business earns $180,000 a year in cash available for debt service. A lender wants coverage of at least 1.25, so total annual payments should be no more than $144,000. If a loan payment is $12,000 a month, that is $144,000 a year, right at the limit. A larger request would fail the test, whatever the program cap.

Ask the lender what ratio they use. It varies. A realistic request that fits your cash flow is more likely to be approved than a large one that does not. Our guide to determining the correct business loan amount helps you pick the number.

Guarantees, down payments and the part the SBA covers

The SBA guarantees a share of the lender's loan, not the borrower. You may still need a down payment, collateral and a personal guarantee.

The guarantee lowers the lender's risk, which is why SBA loans can have longer terms and lower costs. It does not mean the government lends the money or forgives it. Expect to sign a personal guarantee if you own a meaningful share of the business, and expect equity injection requirements for purchases. Read SBA loan collateral requirements and the SBA guarantee fee for the costs that sit around the loan amount.

When you need less than the cap, or faster money

For smaller amounts or tighter timelines, other products can fit better than an SBA loan, which takes more paperwork and time.

SBA loans can take weeks and require tax returns, financial statements and a detailed plan. If you need $50,000 for inventory next week, that timing will not work. If your credit is below SBA norms, the options narrow as well. We cover this in SBA loan credit score requirements.
